Percutaneous versus conventional tracheostomy in burned patients with inhalation injury

چکیده
Study sample The authors included the total number of burned patients with inhalation injury who underwent tracheostomy in their burn unit during the dates of the study. There was no report that power calculations were estimated at the outset. Nevertheless, the authors were able to carry out statistical hypothesis tests and detect statistically significant differences. Thirty-seven patients (25 male; age range: 18 to 75) underwent percutaneous tracheostomy between February 2000 and June 2004. These patients were compared with 22 patients (16 male; age range: 21 to 78) who underwent conventional tracheostomy between January 1997 and January 2000. There was no evidence that the study sample was representative of the study population.

متن کاملAre serum cytokines early predictors for the outcome of burn patients with inhalation injuries who do not survive?
INTRODUCTION Severely burned patients suffering from inhalation injury have a significantly increased risk for mortality compared with burned patients without inhalation injury. Severe burn is associated with a distinct serum cytokine profile and alterations in cytokines that contribute to morbidity and mortality. The aim of the present study was therefore to determine whether severely burned p...
متن کاملInhalation injury in severely burned children does not augment the systemic inflammatory response
INTRODUCTION Inhalation injury in combination with a severe thermal injury increases mortality. Alterations in inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines, contribute to the incidence of multi-organ failure and mortality. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of inhalation injury on cytokine expression in severely burned children. METHODS Thirty severely burned pediatric pati...
